"THE LAKE WAKE"

It was time to say: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

It stinks, It's polluted, It's a disgrace

OPEN IT NOW

Lake Illawarra's partially blocked entrance was closed by the Lake Illawarra Authority on the 23rd of November 2005 stopping the Christmas king tides from filling the lake. The reason given was that heavy rain was forecast and the LIA thought the rain would raise the level of Lake Illawarra to 800 AHD (flood level). That's the level the LIA will open the entrance.

The rain came but Lake Illawarra only rached a high of 600 AHD, 200mm short of the mark.
Save Lake Illawarra Action Group asked the LIA to keep Lake Illawarra open until the end of the holidays.
Lake Illawarra Authority refused. Lake Illawarra was getting more and more polluted, tourists staying away, no prawns running, fish staying in the upper lake and no swimmers game enough to use Lake Illawarra. It was time for "The Lake Wake".

The Chairperson for the Save Lake Illawarra Action Group opened The Lake Wake by explaining the reasons for the Wake and asking the Questions WHO'S KILLING THE 2005-2006 TOUFIST SEASON, PRAWNING SEASON, FISHING SEASON AND SWIMMING SEASON. The over 300 strong crowd then gathered on the adjacent beach to place their crosses with their message to the Lake Illawarra Authority written on it, as a symbolic passing of this years Tourist Season.

The crowd expecting pollution man would be arriving soon, chanted OPEN THE LAKE NOW and wash away the pollution.

Invited to The Lake Wake to hear the residents concerns were David Campbell MP, Minister of the Illawarra, Peta Seaton MP, Shadow Minister for the Illawarra, Ms Saliba MP for the Illawarra, Ms Hay Mp for Wollongong, Wollongon Mayou Councillor Darling and Councillor Kiril LIA representative, Shellharbour Mayor Homilton, Councillor Leeman LIA representative and LIA Community Board Members. Of all these VIP's only Mr Campbell, Ms Saliba and Mr Prosser attended the Lake Wake. Mr Campbell said the lake entrance project would start in May 2006 and be completed in 2 years. The State Government would also spend another $1 million on the drains that flow into Lake Illawarra. The protesters called for Lake Illawarra entrance to be opened immediately. Can we afford the entrance to Lake Illawarra to be blocked for another 2 years? NO!

Local children demonstrated with their own message to SAVE OUR LAKE. They want their lake back

The state of Lake Illawarra was clearly shown when a bucket of sludge from the adjacent beach area was tipped out with the question: would you let your children play in this?

The Chairman of the Lake Illawarra Authority was asked to reply to the protesters demands. His reply was: do you want to hear the truth? The protesters reply was OPEN THE LAKE NOW! His reply to that was: the entrance will not be opened until the lake is in flood.
